Some may remember Gusto as ZenPayroll, but since the name change the service has really grown. Newcomers to Gusto will feel right at home as the software is one of the easiest to use thanks to its intuitive design. That doesn’t mean Gusto is low on features. In fact, the service allows its users to run payroll thoroughly. There’s flexibility with Gusto too, as you’ll have four different payment intervals to choose from and there’s an autopilot mode allowing you to leave it to run with minimal input. Perhaps Gusto’s most useful aspect is how well it deals with all your taxes, automatically generating and completing employee tax forms for you. There are a lot of integrations, although not quite as many as Paychex offers. Some are built into the software – like health insurance and compensation management – but it’s also possible to incorporate accounting software, time tracking tools, expense management software, and much more.
Unfortunately, Gusto doesn’t offer round the clock customer service but you can get in touch by phone, email, or live chat. The website also has helpful user documentation so you can easily find your way around the software. Pricing for Gusto depends on what you want to do with the software and what kind of extra features you need. But overall, it’s one of the best value-for-money payroll services on the market.
One of the oldest payroll services is Paychex, first established back in 1971. The service has adapted to the times and now offers an almost overwhelming number of features. Most importantly though, its payroll services are impressively smooth even if the interface may take a little getting used to at first. Like Gusto, Paychex will handle your tax administration so you can focus on other things instead. We particularly like that as well as processing payouts through direct deposit, you have the option of producing customizable checks and even paying wages onto a paycard. Although Paychex offers some in-house HR services to help keep your company compliant with new regulations, the integrations also cover accounting, business operations, and time tracking, just to name a few. Any expanding business will surely find an integration that helps them.
Paychex’s basic level of customer service is great, with support available via phone or live chat. Depending on your subscription, you can get a dedicated account manager to help you with everything you need 24/7. Prices for Paychex are higher compared to Gusto – however, there is a streamlined version of Paychex for anyone who wants to do their payroll without the extras.
Both Gusto and Paychex are remarkable examples of payroll software, but for smaller businesses Gusto should have a greater appeal. Certainly, it’s the easiest to use of the two, with the most user-friendly interface, and it’s the cheaper option. Gusto is also robust and has plenty of integrations that will become even more useful as a company expands. However, for bigger businesses Paychex is the better option. The range of features is staggering, and the platform goes beyond expert payroll thanks to the huge list of integrations. Of course, all this comes at a price so anyone looking to save money on their payroll software may want to stay clear.
